Jaipur, the “Pink City” of India, has a new landmark dedicated to the art of Meenakari, a centuries-old tradition of adorning metal surfaces with vibrant colours and intricate designs. The Museum of Meenakari Heritage, designed by Studio Lotus, is more than just a museum; it’s a celebration of Indian craftsmanship and a testament to sustainable design practices.
Sustainable Reuse Meets Historical Inspiration
The museum occupies a unique building. When Studio Lotus came on board, a concrete shell already existed on the site. Instead of demolishing it and creating more waste, the architects opted to reuse the structure, aligning with their philosophy of minimizing environmental impact. This “adaptive reuse” approach is becoming increasingly popular in architecture.
The building’s design reflects the rich history of Rajasthan, blending Rajputana, Mughal, and Art Deco influences. The hand-carved red sandstone facade pays homage to the owner, Sunita Shekhawat’s roots in Jodhpur, while seamlessly integrating into Jaipur’s iconic pink colour scheme.
A Museum for a Magnificent Art Form
The ground floor houses the museum itself, offering visitors a chance to delve into the world of Meenakari. Jewellery historian Usha Balakrishnan curated the museum’s collection, showcasing the history and cultural significance of Meenakari through a variety of artifacts – from intricate ornaments to antique pieces. Visitors can learn about the different enamelling techniques used by Meenakari artisans, such as cloisonné and plique-à-jour. The museum serves not only to educate the public but also to elevate the status of Sunita Shekhawat’s brand from a jewellery label to a custodian of this traditional craft.
A Luxurious Retail Experience
The lower ground floor houses the Sunita Shekhawat flagship store, designed to provide a personalized and luxurious experience. Unlike traditional stores, this one is appointment-only, ensuring a private and relaxed atmosphere for customers to browse the exquisite jewellery collections. The space is designed to feel more like a library or lounge, with private pods for one-on-one consultations. The walls are adorned with beautiful frescoes depicting the region’s architecture and wildlife, adding a touch of artistic flair.
More Than Just a Store
The Museum of Meenakari Heritage is more than just a place to buy jewellery. It’s a space dedicated to preserving and promoting a cherished art form. Sunita Shekhawat’s vision of creating a museum not only honours the city of Jaipur but also sets a new standard for luxury retail design. By combining sustainable practices, historical references, and a commitment to showcasing Indian craftsmanship, the Museum of Meenakari Heritage offers a truly unique and inspiring experience.
